Australopithecus Afarensis a.k.a. "Lucy"
In 1974, archaeologist Donald Johanson discovered a partial skeleton in Ethiopia, Africa. The remains turned out be from a female hominid who lived more than 3 million years ago. Johanson and the other archaeologists nicknamed the skeleton, "Lucy" because they are said to have been listening to "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" by the Beatles. Australopithecus means "southern ape" in Latin. The word "afarensis" refers to the Afar Triangle, the region in Africa where Lucy was found.
